CMC, GCC, & DOL Ship Repair Boot Camp XII Completion Ceremony

Cabras Marine Corporation (CMC) is proud to announce the successful completion of the 12th Ship Repair Boot Camp, culminating in a prestigious completion ceremony held on August 8, 2024 at Guam Community College.

The Boot Camp was designed to address the critical gap and growing demand for skilled labor in the ship repair industry here in Guam. A total of 19 participants were trained over the course of 12 weeks, providing them with hands-on experience and essential skills in ship repair by the esteemed faculty of GCC.

The ceremony was attended by island leaders, local officials, and proud family members who gathered to celebrate the achievements of the graduates. The keynote speaker, CDR Kris Blandin, Military Sealift Command Commander, emphasized the critical role that skilled workers play in maintaining the operational readiness of the maritime fleet and the economic vitality of the region.
“Our lives are literally in your hands, and we thank you for your commitment to what you do,” said CDR Blandin. CDR Blandin also spoke of the characteristics that will ensure their success in this industry.

Throughout the Boot Camp, participants were trained in a variety of disciplines including welding, pipefitting, electrical work, and carpentry. The program also focused on safety protocols and industry best practices, ensuring that graduates are well-equipped to meet the challenges of a rigorous career in ship repair.

CMC collaborated with Guam Community College and Guam Dept of Labor to deliver this program, drawing on their expertise to provide high-quality instruction, funding, and support.

“We are incredibly proud of our graduates and confident that they will contribute significantly to the maritime and ship repair industries that are so vital to this region and our island,” said Krystle Merfalen, CMC Chief Operating Officer. “This Boot Camp is not just about filling jobs; it’s about building fulfilling careers and creating opportunities for our people that allow them to give back to their community and their families in a meaningful way.”

Each graduate received a certificate of completion and was recognized for their hard work and dedication throughout the program. We also had the privilege to hear from 2 of our graduates, Marko Leon Guerrero and Aaron Tydingco who shared their experiences with the program and how this opportunity created new paths they did not otherwise consider. Upon completion of the Boot Camp, all 19 graduates have been guaranteed employment at Cabras Marine. As Apprentices, they will undergo more specific hands-on training under the tutelage of skilled and seasoned Journeymen while continuing their education as they work to complete the program and eventually become certified in the skilled profession of their choosing.
